But I Love My Cable TV!

Cut, slash, chop and get rid of cable TV! It’s one of the worst investments you could possibly make! Here’s why:

  1. You get a bazillion channels, but here’s the real problem; you can only watch one channel at a time, but you are paying for 100+. Your return on that investment is horrible. If all you watch is ESPN then you are paying 100 bucks for ESPN and the occasional other channel. As they say you can’t have your cake and eat it too!
  2. After three weeks you’ll be saying “there’s nothing to watch”.
  3. Most people have “favorite” shows or watch sports, news, etc., but there is a way to not have cake and eat it too! It’s called the Internet! Nearly (and I do mean nearly) any show you like you can find it on the internet for free or for a fraction of the cost of cable television.
  4. You may find yourself channel searching most of the night versus actually watching any show for the entire duration. What a waste of time! Worst of all you didn’t accomplish the “entertainment” you were seeking. Sometimes having too many options leads to indecision about which option to choose. I face this problem when it comes to eating out at a restaurant. I over think it and end taking 30 minutes to decide. Don’t let cable TV do this to you.
  5. You are constantly bombarded by commercials!  I hate seeing 5 or 7 commercials between 10 to 15 minutes of a show. How rude! It’s like someone pausing a movie at the theater to advertise their 5 new popcorn flavors. Hey, I’m paying a premium for this!

Here’s some less costly alternatives:

Netflix – I subscribe to Netflix just for their streaming for just over $8! We get most of all the shows and best of all no commercials! Sure they are a season behind, but I can watch them 5 episodes in a row if I want! Also, I don’t have to miss a show because I chose to watch another one. Sure there is TIVO, but what a hassle. Let me spend 15 minutes setting that up…no thanks!

Hulu+ – I subscribe to this one as well and it runs me $7.99 a month. So I’m in at 16 bucks a month so far and the number of options I get is ridiculous. I’ll never watch all the shows, but there’s something for everyone. Hulu is great because I get a lot of the current season of shows. It hits the current season blind spot of Netflix. Together (Netflix and Hulu), I can watch  all the seasons of a show (if they both have them).

  3. Clicker.com – I love clicker.com cause it’s free and it covers everything I could think of that the for two don’t. Most TV’s today come with HDMI or VGA ports so you can plug your laptop/or tower right up to it. There’s also a new thing called “technology” that lets you stream to your tv like Apple TV or ROKU 2.

  4. HGTV.com – When I need that fix for my coveting. Just kidding! Seriously, though I really enjoy watching about the home buying experience and interior design. In 8th grade I wanted to be a fashion designer. Don’t tell anyone!
  5. DIY.com – When something broke and you actually need to fix it yourself cause its expensive to outsource. I look to DIY.com. Okay, so I’don’t really have anything to fix, just need one! I can’t help it!
  6. You can get an Watch sports on the PS3 or Xbox360 (for a subscription service) if you are a sports fan, but it’s relatively cheaper than cable TV.

Between all those options alone you should be able to find something for everyone or some variation of it. It a small hassle to switch from cable TV to these other options, but without the fuss of a sizeable bill each month screaming pay me!
