My Personal Review

Here is the application I used obsessively to help me master page 43 of the PMBOK guide that shows the 42 processes chart. This application gives you 3 options of study and doesn’t do anything else. Those 3 options are to study the project phases, knowledge areas, and the ITTOs (inputs, outputs, and tools). While some may find this limiting I thought it was genius. Much like the PMP Formulas app it doesn’t cover the entire PMBOK, but focuses on a specific area and does so really well. This could be a lessons learned for a lot of project managers who are studying for the Project Management Professional exam. Focusing on one area of study at a time is a good thing and can help you to master material faster.

So let’s get into the phone application. The first screen you will see after the application loads is the initial menu as you see below. You can select one of the options to study. The first option takes you to a drag and drop matching game that scores you as you drag and drop one of the 42 processes that show up at the bottom to one of the process groups (middle photo). You receive a tally next to the check box if you are correct or next to the red X if you drag and drop a process on the process group it doesn’t belong to. The goal is to get all 42 processes assigned to the right process group.

The next (middle button) option you can choose from as shown in the first screen shot above is to match the process groups to their respective knowledge area. Again this is a drag and drop match game like the first option, but with the knowledge areas instead of the process groups. This is another simple, but effective option for mastering the process groups. The first two options when mastered together allow you to build the 42 process chart for your brain dump as if it was second hand nature. This is great since you will need to be fast at creating your brain dump. You only get 15 minutes to go through the test tutorial and create your brain dump before entering the timed PMP Exam, once you sit at your test station at the testing center.

The last option is to toss the inputs outputs and tools. Once you chose the third option you will be taken to another screen to choose the knowledge area you wish to focus on as in the photo below on the left. Then you have to choose the process at the next screen (below middle photo). After choosing the third screen, you will be taken to another drag and drop match game much like the first two options in the app I reviewed above with the same scoring system.

The one thing I wish this app did would be to keep track of your progress and show you in a chart format. This would just be a nice feature, but obviously not a make it or break it app feature. I definitely think this is an application that is worth the purchase if you have an iPhone.
