My Personal Review

By far this is the app that has the most comprehensive coverage of the PMBOK guide from a study and training perspective with excellent amount of depth without becoming as overwhelming as the PMBOK guide can feel. If you are looking for a tool that is a one stop shop then this is the app for you. This app is very appealing visually because it uses a variety of colors, an intuitive interface and the touch screen buttons are very responsive. The first screen shot you receive will give you two options. The first of which is subtle. There are two on screen buttons, the more obvious one being the go button and the subtle “i” button as seen below (left photo). Clicking on the Go button reveals the main directory menu (right photo).

The dictionary is awesome. After you select the dictionary button you will be brought to a menu that gives you two options of navigation. The first is to search for a word or use the buttons to go to the words that begin with the corresponding buttons letter. If you need a definition of a project management term/word you will more than likely find it here (photo above on the right).

The next option is the Formulae button. Here you can find information and an explanation of PMP exam formulas you may come across. I liked that this was a separate option and not directly tied to the calculator function because sometimes I just want the information and not have to see the equation.

The next section is the calculator. Now at first I assumed the calculator function would actually be an exam type review of the equations. Call it disbelief, but I was pleasantly corrected when I clicked on the calculator button to find it is actually a fully functional PMP formula based calculator. You are taken to another sub menu that scrolls across at the bottom to select the formula you need (below, left photo). You got an equation simply fill in the blanks and voila! You get to see the answers immediately without losing the information you input. I thought this was very well thought out and wasn’t an interface like the default Windows XP calculator. There is also to show the formula information if you click on “show detail”, which takes you to the formula’s detail section (below, right photo).

This app has so much depth it’s almost hard to believe when compared to most of the other applications focusing on PMP exam preparation, but there is more. Check out the screenshots of the other sections, such as the review of knowledge areas (screen shots below).

Clicking on the process group button reveals the 5 process groups. I clicked on the planning process group which brought me to the next screen shot below on the right. I really think this app is beneficial and can’t say enough great things about it. Also, you look on the upper right of the bottom left screenshot below you will notice you can select the Practice Exam button that takes you a practice exam covering the process groups.

If you choose the process game button you will be brought to the screenshot you see below. There are 103 cards that you have to match to an option below it. You don’t have to answer the question it gives you and can opt to go the next card. It shows your progress in the upper right as well.

The last option to choose is Exam Info. This section does just that. If you click on the Exam Info button you will be brought to a screen with information regarding the exam. So you will be able to view the exam requirements, additional info about the exam, and the application process.

Lastly, but not least there is one last section that I briefly covered in the beginning, but didn’t review in depth, I will do so here. That section is the “i” at the main menu. It is a screen that explains all of the features of the app as shown above under the application description area at the beginning of this apps review.

Again, the PMP Resource Rise Up app has so much to offer, it’s hard to not to see its value as being a part of your iPhone apps. This is an app that should be in every project managers’ iPhone (for those that have one) if they are pursuing the Project Management Professional credential. I hope this in depth review of iPhone apps that support your mastery of the PMBOK guide in preparation for the PMP Exam.

    Hi Hyles,

Your personal review was so good and inspiring that I bought and downloaded this app, and you know what?

You need to update your app because it more awesome than you have indicated. One part that you did not talk about is a full 200 sample questions exam. The beauty of the exam is it has two modes Training mode in which you can see the explanations and a real mode which almost works like a real exam. One thing that I personally liked was that exam can be paused at any time if you are unable to continue. Will be looking forward for your expert review on this as well.
